Gerber Legendary Blades was founded in 1939 by Pete Gerber and has a reputation for manufaturing quality hunting knives. Many of their design are created by well known knife makers. In some cases the knives are named after the person who designed them. The Freeman Knife is one example of such case. Gerber Legendary Blades headquarters is located within the Portland metropolitan area of Tigard, Oregon in the United States. Gerber is currently a division of Fiskars Brands Inc which is owned by the Fiskars company of Finland. In 1938 Gerber Legendary Blades collaborated with David Murphy which made him their first supplier. Murphy's knives had a distinctive aluminum handle which was later used on many thousands of Gerber Knives. Between 1941 and 1954 Murphy made approximately 90,000 Murphy Combat knives for troops to use in World War II. The knives were made for servicemen during and after WWII and despite the large number of them produced are extremely rare.

Famous designers who have created knives for Gerber Legendary Blades include: Bob Loveless, Paul Poehlmann, Blackie Collins, William Harsey Jr., Fred Carter, Rick Hinderer, and Ernest Emerson. Former Gerber employees who started their own well known knife companies include Al Mar and Pete Kershaw. Gerber also sells a series of folding knives based on the designs of Rex Applegate; It is know as the Applegate series.
